In a world with so many horror movies coming out each year, only a few cement themselves as classics, or truly amazing movies. Today, I will be ranking the top five critically acclaimed horror movies.

5. Get Out (2017)
This movie follows Chris, a young African American man, who plans to meet and visit his white girlfriend, Rose, over the weekend. When Chris arrives everything seems normal, but things shortly change when Chris slowly notices strange things that eventually lead him to a disturbing conclusion about Rose and her family.
This film is very thrilling with a balanced combination of suspense, comedy and twists.
It is most well regarded for its unique themes of racism. This film isn’t just scary but it also makes you think. This movie is incredible and even though it’s #5 it is one of the best modern horror films today.

4. Perfect Blue (1997)
Lead star of Japanese Pop band CHAM! switches career paths and is taken down a very dark path as she becomes an acting star. Mima is followed by all kinds of characters portraying the evils of Hollywood, including the past version of herself where she imagines how her life would’ve been if she stayed on the path of a singer.
This story has dark themes that can’t be described as well as they can be shown; Mima struggles with dissociation and MPD as side effects from the traumatic things she has to do in the show she now stars in. It’s a great movie for those ready to be traumatized by stuff that people really go through.

3. The Thing (1982)
The Thing is one of the best examples of practical effects looking better than CGI. It is about a group of researchers that are stationed in Antarctica. While there, a mysterious monster manifests and terrorizes them, impersonating each of them as they try and figure out who’s a monster or not. The video game Among Us was likely based on this movie as they have very similar concepts.
What I consider to be the best and most interesting part of the movie is the way the monster was brought to life using practical effects; you have to see it to understand. It is truly an amazing site that brings the horror of the situation to another level.

2. The Shining (1980)
This film follows Jack Torrance along with his wife and son, Wendy and Danny, who become the caretakers of the empty and mysterious Overlook hotel during the winter.
During their time at the Overlook, Jack Torrance slowly loses his sanity due to the evil impact of the hotel. This film is terrifying, with amazing acting performances and some of the most iconic scenes ever. This film also has some amazing music choices that keep your attention and add suspense. However, it’s 163 minutes long and can be slow at times. Overall, this is a must watch, powerful, and entertaining film and is widely regarded as one of the best horror films ever made.

1. The Silence Of The Lambs (1991)
I consider The Silence of The Lambs to be the greatest horror movie of all time. It has an intriguing plot, perfectly written characters, and amazing pacing. The suspense that is built throughout the story as more is revealed about the horrifying things that a deranged man is doing, and the closer that the main character Clarence Sterling gets, the closer to the edge of my seat I get. The ending where she is going through the dark is the most I’ve ever held my breath.
Perfect example of a horror movie.
