Do you ever wonder what life would look like if students ran the school? According to some students, the school day would look quite different, and maybe a lot more fun.
One of the first policies to go, you may ask? Homework.
“No homework,” said Rylee Greene (Grade 11), who also thinks that students should get more lunchtime to actually enjoy their food instead of speed-eating and cramming everything down between lunch periods.
Food was definitely a popular topic overall. Students suggested allowing DoorDash deliveries, a policy that would likely make school security nervous but student stomachs very happy.
Coaches also had some pretty good takes. Coach Bekah Brooks didn’t hesitate to answer with: “Four-day weekends for sure,” followed by a second idea, mandatory outside time, which is definitely needed… Cough cough, Mr. King.
Some students had more student body ideas.
“Everyone would have to join an after-school activity,” said Emma Hatch (Grade 10), suggesting a school where everyone finds a club or sport they enjoy.
Meanwhile, Bristol Brooks proposed freedom for drivers: “If you can drive, you should be able to leave during lunch.”
Food was for sure a big topic. Hmm, maybe this article will change minds? Who knows.
Sports were definitely on the mind of student-athletes.
“If I ran the school, I’d practice with all the sports teams,” said Anna Stiles (Grade 11), fully prepared to serve as administrator and coach at the same time. Who wants to see Mr. King at basketball or swim practice?

So would a student-run school be total madness or could we elect a student principal? Maybe one that has a desk next to Mr. King’s.
It’s hard to say, but one thing is clear: the ideas are bold, imaginative, and rooted in the desire for a more enjoyable school experience. And honestly, who wouldn’t want a four-day weekend and a burger delivered to their desk?

I think the way she would run school would be a lot better and more enjoyable for everyone.
