Game Review:
Double trouble?! The FNAF 2 movie came out last Friday and it’s been all the rage, FNAF aka “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is a popular indie game series about a security guard fending off against possessed animatronics, the possessed souls of children who were murdered and stuffed inside the costume suits of the pizzerias characters.
FNAF 2, the game is a prequel to the first game and shares similar gameplay, where the player is stuck in their office with a flashlight, cameras and a mask of an animatronic, all to aid him to survive to 6AM, the player is in a different pizzeria and has to go against double the animatronics, the “toys” and the “withered.”
One thing FNAF is notable for is how vague the backstory of the games are hinted at. The story of one of the owners of the pizzeria killing and stuffing kids inside of costumes was difficult to figure out back when the games first came out in 2014. The only dialogue in the first 3 FNAF games are from phone calls and audio tapes, delivering crucial lore and context to the background of the game.
Movie Review:
FNAF 2 brings in new characters adding on to the main 4 we know and love, like the marionette and balloon boy, but the marionette is crucial to the game’s story because the child who possesses it is the child of one of the co-founders of Fazbear entertainment.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is now no longer just an iconic addition to the FNAF game franchise, but an addition to the series’ movie catalogue. The fans have been eagerly awaiting for this release since it was announced there would be a sequel, and especially since they teased fans with how the new animatronics look, the fans have been waiting impatiently to see them in action.
The most important question is, for a movie based on a video game, how accurate is it to the video game it’s based upon? Well, because it’s a movie so it was much more plot centered, most of the movie wasn’t related to how the gameplay really is, but when they clearly were showing gameplay resemblance, it was pretty accurate. The fundamental feature that FNAF 2 (the video game) gives, of putting on the Freddy mask to ward off the animatronics was used as a fun gimmick in the movie, the correct characters came from the correct spots, and foxy was game accurate too, only problem was the lack of using the lights, one of the only other fundamental feature of FNAF 2 (the video game).
Now, the other question is, was the movie enjoyable? And the answer, in my opinion as a fan of the franchise, is yes, if you’re also a fan of the franchise. Realistically it was a cheesy and at times stupid movie, but not taking it too seriously it was a great watch that gave a lot of laughs and brought intrigue to just how much the lore of the game and the plot of the movies will be connected.
While the FNAF 2 game may have been the more creative and exciting piece of media, the movie was still a fun time whether I was laughing with it or at it, it was a great feature for fans of the franchise.
