After 25 years in Macon County Schools, Mr. Haley is turning the page on a remarkable career as a teacher, coach, and athletic director. Mr. Haley is known for his passion, straightforward honesty, and dedication to students; he leaves behind a legacy that shaped the classrooms, teams, and lives he served.
Funny enough, Haley never planned to become a teacher. After graduating from Appalachian State, he was approached by former teacher and baseball coach Jeff Graham, who wanted him to join his staff. That invitation put him on a path that would become his life for the next 25 years.
“Through the years, I grew to love teaching history and personal finance,” Haley reflected. “It became a priority.”
Haley’s dedication was obvious to those who sat in his classroom. He wasn’t interested in putting on a show or coasting to retirement; he wanted students to learn, think, and grow.
“Love me or hate me, I didn’t want to be one of those teachers that students said they didn’t learn anything from,” he said. “You can’t trick students by being fake in the classroom. They know if you care about them or the subject you teach.”
One of the highlights of his career was teaching the Class of 2025, a group he described as “remarkable.” Their curiosity, maturity, and ability to think critically left a lasting impression on him.
“Being able to engage with high-level thinkers on everything from investing to startup companies making world impacts, while connecting modern news to its historical context, was top notch,” he said.
When it comes to inspiration, Haley points first to someone outside the spotlight: his wife, Dana, an English teacher at Franklin High School.
“Students, parents, and even educators do not truly understand the commitment, work ethic, and toughness it takes to be a high-quality teacher,” he shared. “Watching her churn out elite scores year in and year out without any fanfare is unbelievable. I get embarrassed knowing that I would never be on her level.”
Beyond lessons and test scores, relationships are what Haley values most from his time in education.
Watching former students grow into successful adults, parents, and business owners became one of the greatest rewards of his career.
“The biggest thrill is seeing students over the many years become successful parents and community members through their jobs or businesses they own,” he said.
And while he’ll miss the classroom, he’s also saying goodbye to the smaller, everyday routines that shaped his life.
“I will miss morning coffee with Jesse Pinkston and Ryan Raby,” he confessed. A reminder that some of the best school memories happen outside the bell schedule.
Haley retires with the reputation of a teacher who cared deeply, worked tirelessly, and pushed students to think differently. Whether in the classroom, on the field, or leading programs, he brought energy, passion, and toughness. Qualities that students won’t soon forget.
As Macon County Schools looks to the future, it does so with gratitude for educators like Mr. Haley, whose influence continues long after the final bell.
