North Carolina continues to face problems with food shortages, and many families depend on programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to meet their basic needs.
Food stamps, or SNAP, provide monthly benefits that help low-income households buy groceries. These benefits are placed on an EBT card which families then use these at grocery stores to buy foods such as meat, vegetables, fruits, and bread.
Recently, North Carolina has experienced delays in SNAP benefits. When payments are late or not as big as expected families face more pressure than usual. Rising prices in food make the situation harder.
Because of these challenges, community support becomes especially important. One of the most effective ways for schools to help is through food drives.
Food drives allow people to donate non-perishable items like canned goods, rice, pasta, and cereal. These donations help local food banks fill the gaps that SNAP can’t always cover.
Franklin High School is hosting a food drive that ends November 19th. Be sure to donate non-perishable items to your homeroom teacher to help support your community!
When we have a school food drive it is not just so we can check it off the list but it is a way to help our fellow students and grow as a community.
Thank you to all the students who helped plan this project and all who participated. You make a world of a difference to some people.
