Did you know that almost 30% of our school’s population is made up of Hispanic students? If not, then you may not realize the importance of celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month at our school.
This year will be the first Hispanic Heritage Month at FHS with the CAMINO Club.
CAMINO, which stands for Community, Action, Motivation, Innovation, New, and Opportunities, is a club here at FHS sponsored by Mrs. Higdon and Mr. Faetz. CAMINO aims to create a sense of community and representation for our Hispanic student body.
The club met this past Thursday to discuss their plans for celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. One of their top priorities is to decorate each building of the school and represent all the Hispanic countries and cultures in the world in celebration.
Not only does celebrating cultural backgrounds give students a sense of representation and belonging, but it also encourages students of any and all backgrounds to learn about and appreciate different cultures.
CAMINO meets every other Thursday in Mrs. Higdon’s room to discuss ways to help not just our Hispanic students but the whole Hispanic community. Clubs like CAMINO are incredibly important for celebrating all individual student identities.
CAMINO Club is only the beginning of creating a school environment that celebrates and represents all students.
