The wrestling team built some momentum for tonight’s Section 1AAA tournament opener with its performance in last Thursday’s regular season finale.

The Tigers squared off against Rosemount under the spotlight at Ausburg College and won the final eight matches in a 57-12 dual win over the Irish. The team finished the dual season with a record of 21-10, which earned it a No. 2 seed in the section and a first-round home meet tonight against No. 7 seed Winona. The Tigers also moved up to No. 8 in the state rankings, one spot behind the section’s top seed, seventh-ranked Hastings.

The Tigers built an early lead on the Irish last Thursday thanks to a pin by Trayton Anderson and an 8-0 major decision by No. 2 Victor Gliva over No. 3 Reuben Cephas in a battle of state-ranked 113-pounders. The Irish kept the dual close for a while thanks to wins by Jacob Bottem, Diondre Lodge and No. 1-ranked 138-pounder Adam Hedin, but the Tigers answered by taking the next six weights and then accepting forfeits at 220 pounds and heavyweight.

State-ranked wrestlers Jamin LeDuc, Taylor Venz, Kyle Benjamin and Mason Hawkins closed out the regular season with victories, as did Brayden Chapman, John Walz and Kyle Heusbourg.

Two days earlier, the Tigers needed about a half hour to demolish Burnsville 65-6 in their Senior Night meet.

Gliva, Skyler Raymond, LeDuc, Chapman, Seth Nechville, Walz, Hawkins and John Johnson all won by fall. Venz cruised to a 16-0 technical fall.
