On October 30th, 2018, Prowler Press decided to cover the academic subject of ‘Current Events’. This subject is not commonly heard of, but is very popular, that many students are taking it. I personally did not know this was a class you could take until some of my peers at Farmington High School informed me. Prowler Press sat down with Laura Huls, social studies teacher at Farmington High School, to talk about the Current Events class. What are some current events that are happening right now? Mrs. Huls responded with, “Border Control is a big issue right now, Donald Trump is sending millennials back to their country for being imported illegally. But, the thing is, millennials have lived in the USA their entire lives, it’s like sending a baby to a country to figure out a new life. They grew up like the rest of us did, its wrong that they are being sent back to their country.” How long has Current Events been a class, and how has it changed over time? Mrs. Huls had to think about it a little bit, “The Current Events class started in 2003, 15 years ago, by student demand.” Prowler Press asked one final question about the class, to get more insight on the subject, “Why did you decide to teach this class, and what are the pros and cons? Mrs. Huls repeated, “Like I said, lots of students wanted to learn about Current Events during class rather than learn about World History, so I decided it would be a good idea to teach it for the students that want to learn it. Pros of this class would be its very interesting, everyday students learn something new about what’s going on in the world right now, and so do I! But, some cons would include having a new lesson everyday. Like every night when I get home, I have to do 2 hours minimum of research for a new topic for the next day.” So there you have it! Current Events class has been around for about 15 years, and most students don’t even know about the class. If you decide to want to take this class, read this article, talk to your counselor, and stop by Mrs. Huls’ room for more information.
