Here comes the bride! The one act play that will be performed this year is called “The Wedding Reception” by Anton Chekhov. Bradley Mariska, a band teacher and the director for this play, gives insight as to why this particular play was chosen. He says, “We wanted to do a comedy but something that was also educational … Anton Chekhov is one of the greatest playwrights in history and a master of farce, satire, and social commentary. This play forces students to learn about the history of theatre, theatrical conventions, and very specific acting styles that are different than those used in a musical, for example.”

When asked how he got into directing the play, Mariska shared that he has been in several plays since elementary school, and that he enjoyed it. Because of that, he also directed the one act play at his previous school for six years. Thanks to that experience, he knows the process of what it takes to put on a play, as well as the importance of acting. “Acting is something that helps students to learn how to be more expressive and work together. Acting also develops personal confidence and communication skills, which are so important in life and work.”

The performance of “The Wedding Reception” will take place on Thursday, January 25th at either 6:30pm or 8:00pm at Boeckman Middle School. Admission is free, but the cast and crew are asking for the audience to bring non-perishable food items that will be donated to the Farmington Food Shelf. Mariska also adds, “if you like to laugh, you should come see this play!” Break a leg, Tigers!
