FHS goes through many changes during the three months in summer. This year, the biggest changes was in the 9th grade English curriculum. I talked with Mrs. Anderson, one of the 9th grade English teachers, to learn more about the new plans for freshman this year. Mrs. Anderson has been teaching English here for three years now. “My favorite thing about 9th grade English is the kids! They come in with a lot of energy and new ideas”. She is so excited to see what the rest of the year brings as we close up the first trimester. The English teaching team has rearranged the curriculum to help students succeed as much as they can and leave little room for failure. They’re developing and adding more choices of book clubs and have the freshman see and focus on more social issues in today’s society. They are hoping the students have more flexibility in what they read and write by giving them more choices throughout their units. Mrs. Anderson says, ‘The new curriculum is set up so that it will be very tough to fail”. They believe that these new changes can help the freshman learn more about the social issues of the society we live in today. Mrs. Anderson, along with the rest of the teaching team, wants to support their students in mastering their skills learned and are allowing work to be redone when necessary. They are planning on making adjustments as the school year progresses and as they learn more about the students as a whole so they can become successful readers and writers. They want the student’s grades to reflect on themselves more accurately. With these changes, their hoping the students will be able to start recognizing areas of improvement they can make more easily. The 9th grade English teaching team can’t wait for what this year  brings and is excited to see another year of freshman grow their reading and writing skills.
