The fall season is all about Friday night lights and fall sports. Athletics is a very important to Farmington, but so is education. Farmington High School has welcomed multiple new teachers this year, the English department especially. I met with Ms. Huls and asked her about the first few weeks she has experienced being a full time English teacher at Farmington. Every response was as positive as the last as she told me about the bond she is creating with her students. Ms. Huls teaches 11th and 12th grade English. She graduated from Farmington High School herself and loved it to much to stay away. Last school year, she was a long term English substitute here at FHS. This is Ms. Huls’ first official year here as a full time teacher. She responded with “My favorite thing about coming back is getting to see familiar faces again,” when I asked her what her favorite thing was about the first weeks here. She loves the vibe students bring in and loves helping being able to teach them how to enjoy reading just as much as she does. When asked what her favorite book was, she was at a lost for words, which is a rare occurrence for the English teacher. “I’ve read so many books and I loved all of them, I can’t even think of a favorite.” After a couple minutes she finally came up with one she read back in high school. Ms. Huls loves the book Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. She talked about the strong female messages this book brings up and how young teenage girls can relate to them so easily. Lastly, I asked Ms. Huls what her favorite thing to do outside of Farmington High is. “I love coffee shops, and catching up with friends!” As a high schooler she would get her daily Caribou and talk with friends during her free time as a PSEO student. She has always loved the thought of going and getting coffee and chatting with her best friends. Ms. Huls is so excited for the year ahead and can’t wait to share her love of reading and writing to students all over campus!
