With the second quarter well underway, AP Government and Politics is less than nine weeks from being in session.
AP Government and Politics, or AP Gov, is a course that teaches students the fundamentals of the American government system. Its curriculum explores and analyzes the foundations, institutions, processes, and political behaviors of the system in a college level form, but don’t let that scare you!
Not only is AP Gov a good introduction to AP classes, but it also is a great experience for any student considering college.
Mrs. Gibson, the AP Gov teacher, said, “I feel like AP courses are going to prepare them for what is ahead of them. Without that, it’s not that standard classes won’t prepare them. It’s just that the preparation it gives will put you far ahead.”
Mrs. Gibson is the current AP Government teacher at the high school. Originally from Franklin, She found her love of teaching from her old teacher, Ms. Davis. Ever since then, she has become one of the favorite teachers throughout the halls of Franklin High School with many students such as Elizabeth Cruz-Rios saying “I love Mrs. Gibson!!!” She has taught for almost twenty years now, becoming one of the best in her craft.
Many are afraid to take her class because of the AP title, but there’s no need for fear. If you are willing to put in the extra effort, anyone can succeed in AP Government and Politics, and here’s why.
AP Gov will be able to improve many skills that a student will need.
Mrs. Gibson says, “I believe that students have, as of recently, struggled with reading outside of class, managing time wisely, and putting more effort into some assignments. I feel like AP Gov is able to improve upon these skills.”
AP Gov has other benefits too. The course allows students to be responsible in the politics of their government, setting them aside from the average citizen.
In our current political climate, it is critical for students to understand the way their country operates. AP Gov offers this by “covering the three branches, the ideas that our foundation for government is set on. It is a good, comprehensive class on American government.”
Just because of the AP title doesn’t mean you won’t have fun in AP Gov. The course has plenty of nice moments. Mrs. Gibson brought up many fun activities that would take place during AP Gov, such as “cake days when we do federalism in cake forms, like layer cake vs. marble cake.”
AP Government and Politics can become an amazing class if you’re willing to put in the effort. Join AP Gov next year and experience it for yourself!
