If you walk past the shop room at our school, you’ll probably hear the sound of saws, hammers, and people actually building things.
Mr. Greenwood’s shop class isn’t your average class with desks and textbooks; it’s all hands-on work that students actually enjoy.
Right now, the class is finishing a shed they built completely from the ground up.
Gage Smith, Grade 12, who is taking the shop, says he has learned a lot and that it’s not what most people expect. “A lot of people think it’s just working and not fun,” he said. “But once you get into it, you realize it’s actually really fun.”
But not only do they work on assignments given to them, but they are given time to also go and build things of their own such as speakers and even chairs, such as the one given to Mrs. Higdon by Gage.
When asked, Mr. Greenwood said one of his favorite parts of teaching shop is seeing students learn real-world skills.
“I want them to be able to go out and make money,” and indeed some of his students did. “Just in the last three years, I probably have ten guys I know of on different crews,” Greenwood said.
When asked what he wants future students to know about shop, Mr. Greenwood said, “You don’t need any experience, just a willingness to try something new and actually work.”
